Wylie Robotics Teams
The Wylie Robotics Teams from the Intermediate and Junior High Schools competed in the GEAR Robotics contest last Saturday at Texas Tech. In their inaugural contest, the Intermediate team of fourth grade students Braden King, Austin Petree, and Alek Poradek were awarded “Best Programming” of the contest. Their team score was 10th of the 88 teams participating.
Team members were happy with their performance considering that most of the teams scoring higher were mentored by Texas Tech engineering students. The nationwide contest was sponsored by Halliburton and hosted by the Texas Tech Engineering School for teams in northwest Texas.
The Junior High also participated in the event. Members from 6th grade included Brady Horn,
Jayden Jackson, Preston Williams, Paris Kypke, and Hailey Holcomb. They placed 64th out of the 130 teams participating. The team enjoyed the opportunity and look forward to next year, using their experience to improve their scores. The Junior High team was coached by math teacher, Robin Hart, who allowed volunteers to make up the team.

Transitional First Grade Class
Wylie ISD is pleased to offer a transitional first grade class in 2012-2013. Not all students develop at the same rate, and at the end of kindergarten some children are not quite ready for the challenges of first grade. The Transitional first (T-1) program provides practice opportunities and a successful pace of learning for children who need an additional year of growth and development in academic and social areas before beginning first grade.
Children exhibiting some or all of the following characteristics are good candidates for the T-1 program:
Age—has a spring or summer birthday (young for their class).
Academic Growth—has difficulties with letter recognition, sounds and comprehension; has difficulty understanding math concepts and writing or recognizing numbers.
Physical Growth—weak fine motor skills such as handwriting, coloring; weak gross motor skills such as hopping, skipping, jumping, galloping, etc.
Work and Study Skills—has difficulty completing tasks independently.
The T-1 program will be located on the Wylie Elementary campus. For additional information, please contact the elementary counselor, Mrs. McPherson, at 692-6554, ext. 1402.
